Wedding First Look - Pros and Cons
One of the most common questions couples ask when starting to plan their wedding itinerary is: should we do a first look?
One of the main reasons that raises doubt about seeing each other before the ceremony is the belief that the most special moment of the ceremony is when you see each other for the first time. However, this isn't entirely true.
When organized properly, a first look can become an even more intimate and special moment for the couple than seeing each other during the ceremony. This is because it’s a moment that the couple can enjoy alone, without the pressure of being in front of all their guests.
From a photographer's perspective, there are many other reasons why it's advisable to do a first look. In this post, I will highlight some of these advantages.
Ease the nerves.
It's well known that the most nerve-wracking moment for both members of the couple is just before the ceremony. By doing a first look, you can alleviate the stress of that moment and enjoy the ceremony's protocol even more alongside your guests.
More time for photos.
Doing a first look with your partner also helps distribute the time for your photo session into two or more blocks. Instead of having a one-hour photo session, you can have part of it right after the first look and another possibly at sunset, after the ceremony. This way, you'll achieve a greater variety of photos in different locations, with different types of lighting at various times of the day.
Free time during the cocktail hour.
If you decide not to do a first look, the designated time for the photo session with your partner will be during the cocktail hour. This will prevent you from enjoying that moment with your guests, and since it will be the only time you have for photos, the session may become more prolonged and exhausting.
Private vows.
Many couples choose not to read their vows during the ceremony out of embarrassment or fear of doing so in front of their family and friends. The first look is an opportunity to exchange vows privately, allowing for an intimate and sentimental moment with your partner before saying the big "I do."
